Will Wemby live up to the hype during his first NBA season? Can Scoot Henderson beat him? I analyze the favorites and a few sleepers in this post, before sharing my final ROTY betting pick for the upcoming season.
2024 NBA Rookie of the Year Betting Odds
- Victor Wembanyama; -140
- Scoot Henderson; +225
- Chet Holmgren; +300
- Brandon Miller; +1200
- Amen Thompson; +2500
- Cam Whitmore; +2800
- Jarace Walker; +4500
The ROTY odds for the NBA in 2024 favor Victor Wembanyama, one of the most hyped prospects in basketball history and the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. The other rookies most likely to challenge him for the award are Scoot Henderson and Chet Holmgren.

2023-24 NBA ROTY Favorites
I want to begin by covering the main favorites for the Rookie of the Year award in 2024. My analysis will focus on Wembanyama, Henderson, and Holmgren. These are three talented young players who could have an immediate impact in the NBA.
Victor Wembanyama
- Age: 19
- Position: Center
- Team: San Antonio Spurs
It’s been years since another prospect has entered the NBA with a higher ceiling than Victor Wembanyama. He’s lean, athletic, and plays the center position like a point guard. Standing at 7-foot-4, Wembanyama is also among the tallest NBA players.
The big man can do a lot of different things really well. He’s an accurate three-point shooter who can protect the rim with incredible physicality. His 7-foot-8 wingspan is also absurd and allows him to be a shot-blocking specialist.
During his final season in LNB Pro A men’s league, Wembanyama averaged 21.6 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. He also led Metropolitans 92 to the LNB Pro A Finals and won the MVP award.
There’s no question Wembanyama could average a double-double during his first NBA season. He’s an incredibly dynamic player who’ll turn things around in San Antonio. The Spurs know how to develop young prodigies, so I expect a strong rookie campaign from Wemby.
Scoot Henderson
- Age: 19
- Position: Point Guard
- Team: Portland Trail Blazers
Scoot Henderson is also among the main favorites in the latest ROTY Odds for the NBA in 2024. The Trail Blazers selected him third overall in the draft. Henderson previously played in the G League, averaging 16.5 points per game in 2022-23.
Henderson is a sensational player who would’ve been the top pick in a different NBA Draft. His athleticism and playmaking abilities give him an edge over many other rookies. Henderson will be a major factor this season if the Trail Blazers can maximize his potential.
With Damian Lillard also leaving Portland, Henderson will receive many minutes and opportunities. He’ll be the centerpiece of the offense during his first NBA season, which makes him an automatic ROTY contender. I expect him to average at least 15 points per game.
I believe that Henderson is a strong candidate for Rookie of the Year in 2024. The young point guard already looks like a polished player entering the NBA. He’s great at scoring and can pass the ball with efficiency as well. His overall situation would also allow him to shine on a rebuilding Portland team.
Chet Holmgren
- Age: 21
- Position: Center
- Team: Oklahoma City Thunder
Chet Holmgren missed the entirety of 2022-23 due to a foot injury. Now, he’ll get to play his first full season after Oklahoma City selected him second overall in the 2022 NBA Draft. He should also get plenty of opportunities to contribute for the Thunder this season.
I can’t help but mention that Holmgren is very similar to Wembanyama. He’s a tall and athletic player whose skill set is very unique. He’s also a talented defender, which makes him an asset to Oklahoma City (the center position was in desperate need of an upgrade).
Holmgren can be a key player for the Thunder given his level of talent. He can facilitate the offense and guarding him won’t be easy because of his large frame. His rim protection and shot-making abilities are also exceptional for a player at his position.
The center will be good, but I have doubts surrounding his situation. Oklahoma City will be fighting for the playoffs this year, so efficiency and contributing to winning will be more important than giving Holmgren opportunities to grow.
Sleepers for the NBA 2024 Rookie of the Year
I also want to talk about a few sleepers who could win Rookie of the Year in 2024. These are players who deserve a lot more recognition entering the new season, especially since unexpected winners of the NBA ROTY award occur pretty frequently.
- Anthony Black (+5000). Black is arguably the most underrated rookie in 2023-24. He’s among the best finishers at the rim, and his athleticism is also phenomenal.
- Cam Whitmore (+2800). Whitmore was selected later than expected in the 2023 NBA Draft, falling to 20th overall. However, he looked impressive during the NBA Summer League, averaging 20.4 points per game.
- Amen Thompson (+2500). Thompson is an explosive playmaker who brings a ton of energy and enthusiasm while competing. I expect him to attack the rim and score plenty of points during his rookie season.
2024 ROTY NBA Prediction and Betting Pick
I really can’t go against Wembanyama with my 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year prediction. He’s one of the most dynamic prospects to enter the NBA in years. He also has all the physical advantages of a superstar player and is on a team that will focus on his development right from the start.
Scoot will be a strong contender, but Wemby is just on another level and the odds are decent enough to back him.
