How We Rank & Rate Sportsbooks

We always recommend sites that are legitimate and cover the basic requirements for sports gambling. Beyond that, we look for certain characteristics that are specific to wagering on golf, such as the following:

  • Golf Coverage: We expect that most online sportsbooks will cover golf’s Major tournaments, the entire PGA Tour, and big international events like the Ryder Cup. We also like to see smaller tournaments on weekly basis.
  • Variety of Golf Markets: We look for sites that give bettors the most options, especially when it comes to the biggest golf events and tournaments. Special wagers and props should be involved when it comes to these significant events.
  • Bonuses and Promotions for Golf: We insist that sportsbooks come through with promotions that allow your betting dollars to go far. Those perks should include welcome bonuses as well as promotions aimed at existing players.

How to Choose a Site To Join

We’ve listed some criteria for you to consider when choosing a betting platform to place your golf wagers.

What Tournaments Do You Want to Target?

Most golf fans will want betting access to Major tournaments like The Ryder Cup, The Masters and The US Open. But you also might want to bet on events that don’t get as much publicity. For example, BetUS offers the best range of golf futures out of anyone else in the industry.

How Much Do You Want to Bet?

You won’t have a hard time finding sites that let you make smaller bets on golf. But if you want to raise your betting limit, you need to know which of the high-odds sites give you this chance. Bovada and BetUS typically offer the highest betting limits.

Do You Want Special Wagers?

You might want some special of wagers on top of the traditional golf bets. If that’s the case, look for sites like Bovada that allow you to branch out a bit. They let you request special wagers on certain tournaments, and you can choose from the preset list of golf specials.

Types of Golf Bets

Because of its format, golf provides some unique betting opportunities compared to team sports. Many of the types of bets you’ll find listed below are available only for the top events, while your options will likely be a bit more limited for tournaments that don’t get as much attention.

  • Tournament Winner: This is the bet you’ll find for just about any golf tournament covered by online sportsbooks. You bet on who you think will win the entire tournament.
  • Top 3/5/10/20: This type of wager allows you a little more leeway for the player that you pick. They just have to finish in the top 3, top, 5, and so on in a tournament for you to win the wager.
  • H2H Matchups: You’ll be able to pick between two players in terms of who finishes higher at the end of a tournament. Usually, golf sportsbooks focus these bets on the best or most popular players.
  • Versus the Field: You’ll often see a versus the field bet show up in the later rounds of a tournament if one player is well ahead. With this wager, you’ll be given odds for that player winning or anyone else beating them.
  • 3-Ball Betting: Three-ball betting is similar to a head-to-head matchup, only you’re choosing among three players in a tournament. For a better idea of how to approach this wager, check out our 3-Ball strategy tips.
  • Live Golf Betting: Live golf bets are available while a tournament is taking place. You can generally find many of the same markets as you would pre-tournament, as well as ones specific to live wagering. One good example is a bet on which player in a group playing together will win a specific hole.
  • Finishing Position: This bet can sometimes be found for Major tournaments. It’s a kind of over/under for where a player is going to finish. For example, you might be given odds on whether a player will finish better or worse than 15th at the end of a tournament.
  • Over/Under Points in Team Events: In the Ryder Cup and other team events, players win points for their teams in each round. You’ll find over/under lines for these players based on how many points they will score over the course of the entire event.

Golf Tournaments Available for Betting

While the majority of sportsbooks offer various events every week, certain tournaments attract the most interest. You’ll find the most betting markets for these events.

  • The Masters: It’s perhaps the most storied tournament in America. It’s one of the four Majors and is held every year at the famous Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia.
  • The US Open: The US Open is another of the four Majors. It’s held at a different American course each year.
  • The British Open: Each year, the British Open heads to a different historic course in the United Kingdom. It’s the only one of the four Majors held outside the United States.
  • The PGA Championship: This event is also a Major. It also moves to a different US course each summer.
  • The Ryder Cup: Held every two years, The Ryder Cup pits the best US players against their counterparts from Europe.
  • The Presidents Cup: This is an international event held in the odd years between Ryder Cups. In this case, it’s the United States against a team comprised of countries outside Europe.
  • The Solheim Cup: This event pits the best women’s players in the world against one another in a team format. It’s a US vs. Europe format.

Events like those listed above will be covered by almost all golf betting sites. If you want to bet on less popular tournaments and events, you should try Bovada, which affords access to the widest range of events each year.
